THEY TOURED THE ISLAND of Jamaica hand in hand, with Ana in between them. She didn’t seem to have a problem with Chelsea as long as she was included in everything. Chelsea had already bought her a tie-dyed Bob Marley tee shirt that said “One Love” with a big picture of the man himself. The shirt was so big she could easily use it as a dress, but Ana didn’t seem to mind. She was enjoying her time with a mother figure.

Before you know it, she will be asking you questions only a woman can answer, experience things only another girl can understand and needing the guidance only a woman can provide.

How could he not give Ana every opportunity to have the love of a real mother? And it wasn’t just that. As he watched Chelsea interact with Ana, he was falling in love with her. She was a beautiful woman on the outside, he’d noticed that the moment he picked her up from the asphalt the first day they met, but there was something else that made the woman attractive. She was spunky, yet compassionate. She understood loss, and she’d been through debilitating pain. Most of all, she understood him. But could it last? If she moved to Tallahassee, Zach was sure it could.

It had been a hard win, but Chelsea had defeated Ana in the battle over whether to visit the museum or the dolphin park. He stayed out of it and enjoyed allowing Chelsea to regulate the girl for a while.

Getting on a colorful bus that promised to lead them to their destination, Zach found them a seat in the middle. The bus was close to full already, and the immediate smell of body odor mixed with a variety of perfumes was proof of that. Small fans blew from above. Whether they were to cool off the tourists in the hot bus or to push the odors out the open windows, Zach wasn’t sure. As the bus rumbled off, a dark man with a small potbelly disguised under a dashiki stood at the front and welcomed them to Jamaica in a thick accent. A guitar was strapped to his back, and a slouchy Rasta beanie sat on top of his short dreds.

“Welcome! We are glad to have you here in our humble country.” He pulled his guitar to the front. “I will be your entertainment for the ride.”

Entertainment? Zach looked at Ana, and she giggled. Chelsea bent forward and directed her eyes toward the ceiling. Zach looked up. The top of the bus was covered in Jamaican flags, marijuana leaves, and snapshots of Bob Marley. Zach shook his head at her, and she smiled. He was sure that the marijuana leaf was the official flower of the country.

The man strummed a few cords and then broke into a Bob Marley song. “Every little thing, gonna be alright.”

The guy was most likely the worst Bob Marley impressionist. He probably didn’t get paid much for his job. Entertaining, though. The man stopped singing and spoke a little about the island.
